Poliester adalah suatu kategori polimer yang mengandung gugus fungsional ester dalam rantai utamanya. Meski terdapat banyak sekali poliester, istilah "poliester" merupakan sebagai sebuah bahan yang spesifik lebih sering merujuk pada polietilena tereftalat (PET). Poliester termasuk zat kimia yang alami, seperti yang kutin dari kulit ari tumbuhan, maupun zat kimia sintetis seperti polikarbonat dan polibutirat.

Dapat diproduksi dalam berbagai bentuk seperti lembaran dan bentuk 3 dimensi, poliester sebagai termoplastik bisa berubah bentuk sehabis dipanaskan. Walau mudah terbakar di suhu tinggi, poliester cenderung berkerut menjauhi api dan memadamkan diri sendiri saat terjadi pembakaran. Serat poliester mempunyai kekuatan yang tinggi dan E-modulus serta penyerapan air yang rendah dan pengerutan yang minimal bila dibandingkan dengan serat industri yang lain.

Kain poliester tertenun digunakan dalam pakaian konsumen dan perlengkapan rumah seperti seprei ranjang, penutup tempat tidur, tirai dan korden. Poliester industri digunakan dalam pengutan ban, tali, kain buat sabuk mesin pengantar (konveyor), sabuk pengaman, kain berlapis dan penguatan plastik dengan tingkat penyerapan energi yang tinggi. Fiber fill dari poliester digunakan pula untuk mengisi bantal dan selimut penghangat.

Polyesters include naturally occurring chemicals, such as in the cutin of plant cuticles , as well as synthetics such as polybutyrate . Natural polyesters and a few synthetic ones are biodegradable , but most synthetic polyesters are not. The material is used extensively in clothing.

Depending on the chemical structure, polyester can be a thermoplastic or thermoset . There are also polyester resins cured by hardeners; however, the most common polyesters are thermoplastics. [1]

Polyester fibers are sometimes spun together with natural fibers to produce a cloth with blended properties. Cotton -polyester blends (polycotton) can be strong, wrinkle and tear-resistant, and reduce shrinking. Synthetic fibers using polyester have high water, wind and environmental resistance compared to plant-derived fibers. They are less fire resistant and can melt when ignited. [3]
